Our History.

Clara was the first club in Leinster affiliated to the GAA outside of Dublin, with its foundation dating back to six weeks after the historic meeting in Hayes Hotel in Thurles. Because of the socio-economic dynamics of a small industrial town whose main employer J.eLF. Goodbody favoured other sports, Clara GAA was mainly rural based with hurling the dominant game until the mid-1950s.

Clara won their first title in 1911 (Junior Football). There were stirring times ahead for the club when both Junior titles were contested in 1919, football successfully and the hurling crown for the first time in 1920. In 1923 Clara became the first club in Offaly to contest both the Senior football and Senior hurling finals in the same year. Clara won the Intermediate hurling final in 1934, the first final to be played in O'Connor Park, Tullamore. Other notable successes for the club were the 1952 Minor football title, the Junior football title 1954 and the Intermediate football title 1956.

Clara finally made the big breakthrough in Senior football, capturing the Senior football title in 1960. This victory allowed Willie Nolan the great privilege of leading Offaly out in their first All-Ireland football final in 1961. Clara won their second Senior football title in 1964. It was not until 1991 that Clara won their next Senior football title and this was followed by further successes in 1993, 2003 and 2009. Clara also won the intermediate hurling final in 2003 the same year as the Senior football final.

For the first 90 years of our existence we were a nomadic club, using and playing in fields that were available all over the parish to us. All that changed in the 1970's when the club purchased J.eLF Goodbody's sportsfield and developed it for exclusively GAA purposes. This pitch was officially opened in 1980 by Paddy McFlynn.

The club had previously purchased a local ballroom in the centre of town as a social centre. In 1996 the club were able to purchase a second playing field Pairc Phroinsias and a further purchase in 2007 of the adjoining 12.5 acres and convent grounds has allowed the club to increase their facilities.
